When something breaks, it splits, smashes, shatters into many different parts. The ‘whole’ breaks up into fragments and creates endless possibilities. A “possibility” is the chance or potential of something existing or happening - a real probability that something can happen. But first you have to create that possibility.


1. What made you choose art as a profession?
There wasn’t one single moment. I see it as the sum of several factors. It certainly involved willpower and commitment.

2. How would you define your work?
I think it’s still early days to be talking about my work. If one’s work is a castle (in the sense of a fortress and a show of strength) then I’m only building the first walls.

3. What subjects are you interested in?
For some time now I’ve been working on a line of thought based on the idea of things breaking. When something breaks, it splits, smashes, shatters into many different parts. 4. What resources – formal or otherwise – do you use in your work?
Photography and movement-image. Water and glass.

5. What relationship does your work have with reality? What are your raw materials?
For the Studies series, it was vital to start from visible, intact reality. There was a clear documentary side to it. I used two-dimensional representations of reality (reflections) and from there, I intervened directly in the environment, tearing or ripping it to create a third altered, confused representation combining both possibilities. At the start I worked towards a translucent composition made out of multiple reflections of visible reality – fragmented reality carefully put together in a minimal central mound. Later I looked for a single reflection of reality and its imminent breaking point – both converging moments.

6. What, according to you, is the point of art?
I’d rather not talk about art in terms of its purpose or usefulness. I see art more as an act of resistance. Resisting is when a body or force opposes the action or violence of another body or force. Regardless of whether the motive behind it is internal and/or external, art is a form of resistance to any action driven by subjective and/or objective causes that makes us stop and look.

7. How do you hope the public will receive your work? What audience are you aiming at?
I hope people will give me a chance.

8. What qualifications have you got? What do you value most from your time in education?
I graduated in psychology. Those five years were fundamental in my life for everything I worked on afterwards. Then I did vocational training in photography and film.

9. How would you define your current professional situation? And in the future?
Delicate. It depends on different factors, as I said before. As for expectations for the future, ‘expectations’ suggests what you hope will happen, and in addition to wanting something to happen, you also have to commit yourself and tackle difficulties one by one. Resisting.

10. Many artists say it’s difficult to make a living from their work; how do economic considerations affect you when it comes to work? Do you think this has a bearing on your work?
I don’t know anyone who would argue with that. Obviously, it’s difficult economically and even socially. However, I should say that being economically comfortable is not a sufficient condition for work to happen. We’re talking about work in a society where, apart from some small spheres, it’s not easy for artistic work to be recognised as work, in the widest sense of the word with all its implications. If we start down this path, then we’re in trouble. Recognised, remunerated work has to pay for the remaining time to carry out this other activity… It has a bearing on my work in that it delays it. It’s a question not only of time, but also of the right and wrong time, of moments in life.

11. What do you look for or expect from your relationship with promoters and curators? What advantages and difficulties have you found with these relationships?
A serious, committed and eager approach, and truthful use of power. There’ll be advantages provided there’s understanding, which can be indisputably positive.

12. What do you think sets the arts scene in Madrid apart from elsewhere? What would you say are its pluses and minuses?
I can’t be objective on this point at the moment. But as someone not originally from here, the arts scene in Madrid seems to open doors for me. I’ve been living in Madrid for six years and although I do my art in this city, I don't feel part of any scene. I don’t think it would be wise for me to complain in my situation.
