Jordi Ribes

Artist selected by Armengol, David at 2010

My work centres on painting, stressing its narrative side by representing what appear to be stagings from a children’s game whose characters, situations and landscapes evoke fantasy films, art, fairy tales… By stunning and seducing, I explore an introspective, closed world that alludes to our closest collective imagination.

This attempt to disorientate spectators is reinforced by the style of painting that uses oils stripped of their usual malleability to paint with a cold, polished and artificial diction… A technical perversion that approaches digital language in a game of hybrids between computers and painting.

Questions

1. What made you choose art as a profession?
Because I like it and I think it’s what I’m best at.

2. How would you define your work?
It’s as if an adult had a digitalised dream that gave them the chance to go back to childhood.

3. What subjects are you interested in?
Narration, film, perversion, the subconscious, art, memory, fetishes, digital images, fairy tales…

4. What resources – formal or otherwise – do you use in your work?
Above all in terms of form I use resources to get the finished paintings to look like they’ve just been Photoshopped.

5. What relationship does your work have with reality? What are your raw materials?
It’s related to the reality that comes from fiction. My raw materials are decontextualised images; I construct and create narratives from them.

6. What, according to you, is the point of art?
It can be whatever anyone wants it to be, but like language, which is what interests me most, the main thing is its use to communicate.

7. How do you hope the public will receive your work? What audience are you aiming at?
I hope they like it and that it makes them think and moves them in some way.

8. What qualifications have you got?
What do you value most from your time in education?
Academically, fine art. What I valued most was the people around me – that was key for me.

9. How would you define your current professional situation?
And in the future?

I try to get to the studio whenever I can and hope to continue doing so.

10. Many artists say it’s difficult to make a living from their work; how do economic considerations affect you when it comes to work? Do you think this has a bearing on your work?
It’s difficult to make a living and if I had greater purchasing power I might consider other kinds of work in addition to painting, although you never really know what actually limits you.

11. What do you look for or expect from your relationship with promoters and curators? What advantages and difficulties have you found with these relationships?
I want them to get involved and hope they act as a bridge to reach the public. It’s appreciated when they place the artist centre stage.

12. What do you think sets the arts scene in Madrid apart from elsewhere? What would you say are its pluses and minuses?
I’m not sure, but I haven’t lived in Madrid for long. What I miss is seeing more exhibitions by foreign artists with different ideas representing other countries.
